Apple TV remote has not worked properly since the new one came out.I have the second generation. Won’t pair, volume will not adjust, just garbage. I’m not in the mood to purchase a $50 remote.
Try restarting and pairing the remote again, as described in

A normal remote should restore functionality by restarting and/or pairing again, as described in the previous link.
If it is physically undamaged, and is within the warranty period, and doesn’t work as it should, then contact Apple about ‘servicing’ (testing and possibly replacing).
You know, I think I tried that several times already. And restarting the appletv. And charging it to full.
