How to use 2011 iMac as an extra display for 2017 MacBook Air

Hello,

I am trying to use a 2011 iMac (21.5 inch) as an extra display and connect it to my 2017 MacBook Air. I realize I need a thunderbolt cable, but I am unsure which one to get and which one is compatible with the 2011 iMac since its older. It seems like the 2017 MacAir needs a Thunderbolt 3 but the 2011 iMac needs a regular Thunderbolt.

Can someone please help me here?

Target Display Mode is no longer supported and it will not work, if your 2017 MacBook is running anything later than Catalina.
