Setting up mail

I recently got a new Macbook Air. When setting up emails, I select google as my account provider. Then I get a 'connecting to browser' loading screen, and it just won't load (screenshots attached). I've left it for hours, retried to connect, quit the app, etc etc etc. The same thing happens if I try to manually enter my email through 'other mail account.

I've downloaded the 'mail for gmail' app as well, and when I try to log in I get 'couldn't sign you in. This browser may not be secure' no matter how many times I try.

I can access my gmail accounts fine on my browser, but if I need to send an email directly from a website it redirects to mail.

Solutions? Experience?

Thankyou!!

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15

Verify you have Safari set as the default browser and try again your mail setup.
