/Which cable do I need?
I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) and am going to purchase a MacBook Air M2. Which cable do I need to transfer data from my old Mac to the new MacBook Air?
MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.4

Ideally, you'd use a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 cable for transfer optimum speeds. The standard USB-A connecter on your old MacBook would work too, though.
From there, it's as simple as following these steps - Move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support

Do you not use iCloud or Time Machine? Because you don't really need to put either machine into Target mode.
I honestly backup to an external HD and install fresh copies of all my programs anytime I install a New OS.
