Dropped and Cracked iPad Screen Now Is Unresponsive

Hi Apple Community,

My iPad Air was recently dropped and cracked. It still powers on normally, but it is no longer responsive to touch. Is there anything that can be done to repair an unresponsive iPad Air? Is it necessary for me to have it repaired?

Thank you.

The iPad Air2, if you have one, is still in hardware support - although it too is getting long-in-the-tooth. While the Air2 supports iPadOS 15.x, it has the bare minimum technical specification to run the latest major version of iPadOS.

The cost of repair will still be c.60% of its original value. You would be best advised to use this money toward a much newer model of iPad, capable of considerably better performance.

A damaged or cracked screen is unlikely to work properly, if at all. If you have an older model iPad - such as the first generation iPad Air mentioned in the tags appended to your post - a screen replacement is unlikely to be possible.

The iPad Air1 is now out-of-support with Apple. Even if parts were available, the cost would be uneconomic - typically c.60% of the “as new” price of your iPad. The Air1 cannot be updated beyond iOS 12.5.5 - with iPadOS 15.5 being current.

You would be best advised to set-aside the [now] broken iPad - and replace it with a current model capable of running the current version of iPadOS. All current models of iPad will also be capable of running the next major update to iPadOS 16.x when released later this year.

Of current models, even the entry-level iPad9 is significantly more powerful than your existing iPad Air1.
