Contact App not working M1 MacBook Pro

I recently purchased a new 2021 M1 MacBook Pro. When I set up iCloud my messages were not syncing. So I signed out and resigned into iCloud and now my Contact App is not working at all. It did work initially, but after signing out it no longer does. I have verified I'm signed in to iCloud and have the contacts turned on.

I can open the app, but there are no contacts showing. Also, no other accounts work with the app either. In fact when I view the accounts under the preference page, I don't see an option for Fetch, like I see in screen shots on the web. I've added other accounts and there is no option for Fetch for them either. And even if I have more than one account activated there is no option to change default account. These options just don't show up at all.

I've tried, singing in and out of my iCloud several times. I've created a new account on the MacBook Pro and the contact app doesn't work under that account either. I've booted in Safe Mode and tried doing things. I've deleted files from the library/application support/address book folder. Nothing seems to work. I'm thinking the app itself is corrupt? Any help is appreciated.

I wanted to follow up with this because I got my contacts working and maybe it'll help someone else.

I want to start by saying, I'm not entirely sure what was blocking it, but I'm thinking it is a setting within my router or a firewall on my system. I can't pin-point it exactly, but when I connect my MacBook Pro to another wifi network my contacts load. In this case I set my iPhone to a hotspot to test the theory and it worked.

It appears, once they are syncing, they continue to sync without issue. It is just the initial setup that was being blocked somehow from my network.

I can confirm it is my network because I also have a Mac mini, which stopped syncing when I signed out of my accounts. But, when I connected to my phone's hotspot and disconnected from my network it synced without issue. After a reboot, everything seems to be working fine, even though I'm back on my home's wifi.

I'm using an Orbi RB 40 as a router for what it is worth.

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities, khorn73,

Congratulations on your new MacBook Pro! It looks like you have done some great isolation and troubleshooting to figure out where the issue with your Contacts app lies. Since the app is not behaving as expected in safe mode or a new user account, we agree the issue is likely related to the app itself versus something else.

Reviewing the steps outlined in If an app on your Mac stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open - Apple Support, which directly deals with a variety of app-specific issues on your Mac, we can recommend that you check for, and install, any available macOS updates next to see if that resolves the issue: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support. Since the Contacts app is part of the macOS software, updating macOS will also update the Contacts app. These updates may include fixes to the issue you're experiencing.

If not, please get in touch with Apple Support directly. They will have the necessary tools and resources to continue assisting. You may do that here: Get Support.

Have a great weekend!

Thank you for the reply. I have tried several things with no luck:

  • I updated all my Apple devices.
  • I signed in and out of iCloud on all my Apple devices. Which, was a mistake because now my M1 Mini is having the same issue.
  • I booted in Safe Mode.
  • I've created a new account and signed in using the new account.
  • I deleted preference files and application support files for the Contacts app.
  • I even tried erasing the entire drive and reinstalling the OS clean without migrating any information and it still has not fixed my issue.

I thought it might be an iCloud issue, but after doing a fresh install, I tired just adding my Google account to contacts before signing into iCloud. It allows me to add an account and activate it, but there is no Fetch option and it never seems to actually try to pull the information from any new accounts added. When I activate my Google account in Mail it asks me to sign into Google and then I have to authorize it from my account, but when I turn it on in Contacts, it does nothing.

One final thing to take into consideration. I have my account setup also on my wife's computer and it is still pulling my contacts from my iCloud account. But, if I try to add any other accounts it does nothing. So, it appears anywhere it is currently set up works fine. But, any new devices or if I sign out of a device and try to sign back in, it won't add or fetch the information.

I have already called support and they are working with me to resolve this, but so far there is no solution. Curious if anyone else is having a similar issue?
