We cannot answer effectively without knowing your iMac's SUB-MODEL. iMacs date to 1998 in five broad families and, even within one family, the sub-model can limit your system software options.

Please do "About this Mac..." from you Apple menu and tell us what that show from your sub-model:

For security reasons please DO NOT post a serial number.

Your iMac must be 2012 or newer to to run a higher OS than High Sierra. How much higher is 100% dependent on the sub-model and, at this point, only you know that.
