How do I stop using iCloud?

I am using iCloud to sync things like Calendar, Contacts etc. It has been so long since I did this I am not even sure how I set this up. I would like to continue doing this as I have an iPhone and iPad also. I did something recently and now my Desktop and Documents folders are on iCloud. There is also a Downloads folder showing up as being on iCloud but it is empty. There is another Downloads on my local drive and it has data in it; it looks right.


I want to get my Desktop and Documents back on my local drive so I can stop using iCloud except for the above-mentioned syncing.


Any suggestions. Thanks.

Turn off Desktop and Documents

  1. From your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences. Click Apple ID, then click iCloud. On macOS Mojave or earlier, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click iCloud.
  2. Next to iCloud Drive, click Options.
  3. Deselect Desktop & Documents Folders.
  4. Click Done.


What happens when you turn off Desktop and Documents

When you turn off Desktop & Documents Folders, your files stay in iCloud Drive and a new Desktop and Documents folder is created on your Mac in the home folder. You can move files from iCloud Drive to your Mac as you need them, or select all of your files and drag them to the place you want to keep them.
