Setting up/Updating my Apple Watch

When I try to set up my apple watch, it says I just update it. So I try to update it but it says “Checking for software update failed because you are not connected to the internet” even though I definitely am connected to the internet. I have tried restarting my phone, restarting my watch, pairing manually, I just cannot get past updating it because it’s saying i’m supposedly “not connected to the internet”
