Does anyone know what to do if the iPad will not recognize any Apple Smart Keyboard?

I have 2 iPads and two Apple Smart Keyboards. They both work on one of the iPads (which are both 7th generation iPads) but not on the other. The software is updated on both. I have restarted the ipad and reset the iPad and still nothing. Does anyone know a trick to try?

Carefully/gently clean the smart connector contacts on both the iPad and keyboard with a soft pencil eraser. Ensure that the contacts are dirt and dust free - and all debris from the eraser have been removed - before reconnecting the two.
