I upgraded from Big Sur (original OS on my Macbook Air) to Monterey. Apple Mail no longer functions, for either of my two mail accounts (gmail and Exchange). I also have Outlook installed, and it works perfectly, for both accounts. Closing and restarting Mail does nothing.......

I inserted my existing MS password into the Exchange settings. There doesn't seem to be an option to do so in the gmail account setttings. Regardless, nothing changed. Exchange email still not functioning, even with the password insertion.
You may need app specific passwords for gmail & exchange. Login to their respective sites and you should be able to create one for each if needed.
