GPS on Apple Watch SE

My husband runs a lot but his watch paired to an XR has started to cut off a certain area every time, it used to map the area before. He contacted Apple who told him to check for updates and refresh on phone and watch, which he did, but has not rectified the problem. All heart rate, tracking etc all on too.

Any idea why it has stopped picking up a certain area

Could be a weak or non existent GPS signal,it does happen especially around tall buildings or thick wooded areas.

Partial map;

On the paired iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and verify that you toggled on Location Services

Then, tap Location Services > Apple Watch Workout and choose While Using the App under Allow Location Access

Repeat the above step for Maps, so it’s also set to While Using the App

For iOS 14+, toggle on Precise Location

If not turned on, the Workout app cannot adequately determine your route
