Why do I not get an audible or vibrating notification for incoming text messages when my iPhone 12 is locked?

Do you happen to be wearing an Apple watch? If so does the notification go there when the phone is locked? If so that is by design you get alert to one device only.

When my iPhone 12 is locked I do not get a notification for a new text message. But when the phone is unlocked I get a notification. How do I fix this?
