trying to pair apple watch and it says no internet connection

I have an Apple watch I haven't used in a few years that's been sitting in a drawer. I wanted to use it again, so I tried to pair it with my phone (same phone it had been previously paired to) but each time I get past the screen with the image capture, it says it needs to update software, then stops as it says there is no Internet connection.
