Gmail Stuck in Outbox in Apple Mail

I can't send gmail from my account thru apple mail today because I get an error message as follows:

"LoginFailed

Enter the Password for the [gmail account you are using]. Google requires completing authentication in your web browser. [Click on] 'Cancel' or 'Open Safari.'"

I have tried many things. Nothing works so far. (I use Catalina.)

Per chance did you enable two-factor authentication on your Google user account? If so, you will need to substitute an app-specific password for your normal Google password to use in the Apple Mail app.
