i never set up a passcode

I'm trying to update some things in my phone and it keeps asking me for a 6 digit passcode. I don't remember ever setting up a passcode?

Firstly not setting up a passcode is extremely dangerous. You cannot use a lot of the nice features like Wallet and Keychain. Have you tried setting a passcode up?

Secondly you may have to use the procedure in blue at the top of your question. to gain access.

Worst case scenario this is a phone bought used and jail broken and therefore useless
