problems setting up homepod mini

Hello,

I bought a HomePod mini for a friend, visited them to set it up and ran into problems.

The problem:

When setting up new HomePod mini with an iPad 5th Gen (iPadOS 15.6.1, up to date), I get the following message:

"To continue, set up the following on your iPhone. Two-factor Authentication, Sign into iTunes"

The iPhone in question is an iPhone 6. Apple states the minimum requirement for HomePod mini setup is iPhone 6S.

Two-factor authentication is On.

And I have signed into the iTunes Store , signed up for an Apple Music subscription (6 months free trial).

I tried signing out of iCloud on the iPhone, to try and remove it from the setup process, but I can't remember if I restarted it (as mentioned elsewhere). Perhaps not.

When attempting setup again, the iPad continued to prompt me to continue setup on the iPhone, even though I had signed out of iCloud.

My questions are:

Shouldn't I be able to set up the HomePod with the iPad alone?

When I return to my friends house, if I sign out of iCloud / iTunes Store on the iPhone 6, and restart the iPhone, is this likely to work / is this the accepted, proven fix?

Any thoughts, insights much appreciated.

From HomePod - Technical Specifications:

System Requirements

  • iPhone SE, iPhone 6s or later, or iPod touch (7th generation) with the latest iOS; or iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation or later), iPad Air 2 or later, or iPad mini 4 or later with the latest iPadOS
  • 802.11 Wi-Fi Internet access

So you should be able to set up the HomePod with the iPad. See the Press the top of HomePod to reset it section of Reset HomePod - Apple Support and follow the steps carefully as given. This should start the setup process over with no knowledge of the previous attempt to set it up with the iPhone 6. Assuming your friend doesn't have existing HomeKit accessories you might also go into the Home app on the iPad and remove any Home that appears there before attempting to set up the HomePod.

Thanks tt2, ok, I think I have enough knowledge to go back and try again.

I will try the following:

  • sign out of iCloud, and Media & Purchases on the iPhone 6.
  • restart the iPhone.
  • reset the HomePod mini

I will then attempt setup via the iPad.

If that fails, I'll try using the Home app on the iPad.

Many thanks again for your help. I'll report back, likely next week.
