Viewing Photos stored on my external hard drive

How can I recover the photos I have been storing on my external hard drive? I have never had trouble with this before. All of a sudden, I get a message saying that I have "migrated my photos" and they can't be opened on my Macbook Air.

You are trying to open your old (migrated) iPhoto library.

Hold down the option key, while starting photos. Select the Photos library that you migrated from iPhoto (presumably the one on the EHD) and open that.

Just to check - what is the format of the EHD?
