Wide Gamut versus Standard Rec 709 setting for Library and Projects

I filmed footage using S-Gamut3.Cine, which is a wide gamut color space. When I imported the clips into FCPX, I set the Library to Wide Gamut. Strangely enough, the inspector metadata classified the clips as Rec709. When I set the library to standard color profile, the inspector classifies the file as HD-1-1. Am I correct in thinking I should set the library and projects as Wide Gamut and override the color space? Also, why is it wrongly flagging the clips as Rec709.

It is a little confusing. The Sony format allows for greater color range than normal 709, but does not allow for the higher luminance range of HDR. It’s normally graded for Rec709 delivery on an SDR monitor.

Humans can perceive ~1 million different colors (or so it's claimed -- that's a little more generous than I remember).


RGB has ~16.78 million colors -- more than 16 TIMES the number of colors we can perceive.


Wide Gamut/HDR hype is ridiculous. You're never going to see any more than you already do.


LUTs are largely unnecessary and much more work than they're worth.

There's also an ARRI Log-C sample.

There are generic samples and one that I used some sky replacement (I point it out) because, wide gamut or not, there was just not enough information to pull a sky out of it.

What's more the question than what we can see is what the TV or the monitor can display. The difference between what an HDR monitor can display for the humans to see is almost literally the difference between day and the night of an SDR monitor.


I agree the business of stretching the color gamut with log in 709 on an SDR display is pretty much bait and switch. The Sony sensor might be capable of a wider color range, but until you can put it on a display that can show that greater range it's kind of pointless, especially if can't also increase the luma range beyond the Rec709 on an SDR monitor. Without the hugely increased contrast range of HDR from deep black to sunlight you can't see the whole range of colors that many camera sensors are capable of.
