When I hit the icon on my Mac for Apple TV it the screen that appears suggests I do a free trial. I already have a subscription and it worked yesterday

On my Mac the icon for Apple TV stopped recognizing that I have a subscription

Verify that you are still signed in to the TV app (menu Account).

Try signing out, then sign in again.
