I want to be able to easily see her photos and she wants to be able to see mine.

When you share an icloud+ storage plan, you are sharing the storage, but not the data you have stored. You will still not be able to see each others pictures, unless you upgrade to iOS 16 and/or macOS 13 Ventura, if you are using a Mac.

With the next version of iOS and macOS coming this fall you will be able to set up and use a joint iCloud Photos Library, after you set up Family Sharing. You will probably need more than 5GB each to be able to share a Photos Library ad still keep iCloud backups of your devices. Go at least for the 50GB storage plan.

The promised shared Photos Library is described here: iOS 16 - New Features - Apple

iCloud Shared Photo Library*

Smart setup rules

Smart sharing suggestions

Contribute photos manually, or use smart features to make sharing seamless, like a switch in Camera, automatic sharing using Bluetooth proximity, and sharing suggestions in For You.

Everyone has equal permissions to add, edit, favorite, caption, and delete.

Relive more complete memories
