I've updated my XR this morning, I've just checked my Kindle app and yes, I have the same behavior (to be frank, I always use that app in portrait mode, so it's not a big problem to me). I've tried also a "forced" restart of my device, but no luck.
I suggest that we (you) notify this problem to Amazon Kindle support team.
