Apple Pencil compatibility: look like will only work with 1st gen pencil. Does it pair by plugging in the lightening port?

Yes.

The original, 1st gen Apple Pencil is the only Apple Pencil version for that year and model iPad.

And, Yes, the 1st gen Pencil pairs and charges through the Apple Lightning connector and also using a supplied adapter to charge the 1st gen Pencil with a supplied iPad power/charging adapter.

FYI,

Make sure to keep the Pencil needs to be kept CONSTANTLY charged to a minimum of 5-10%, OR GREATER, all the time!
