After the software update is downloaded, it reflects “Preparing updates . . . “ but nothing happens. I have restarted and al so shutdown, unplugged and turned back on but every time I get to this point it just freezes.

Did you try launching the installer from a Safeboot....


Log in SafeBoot How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support


If you have the full installer it sits in your Application folder "Install macOS Monterey.app" you launch it like an other applications.
