Trouble completing iPhone SE purchase

When I provide the current cellphone number, I get this message from Apple:


We’re unable to contact your carrier to verify your account, but we can still proceed with your order. However, this iPhone will not be connected to a carrier plan. You can reach out to the carrier of your choice to finish activation later.


The carrier in question is Verizon.


I was able to purchase a phone last month without issue.

OK, I’ll take one more guess about your particular scenario.


Last month (August), the current iPhone at the time was the iPhone 13 generation which came with SIM cards and had an eSIM capability. This month (September), the current iPhone is the iPhone 14 generation, which does not have a SIM capability in the U.S. (only eSIM). The iPhone 14 generation offers less carrier pre-activation setup than previous generations. Perhaps that’s what you’re seeing.
