i have a macOS Big Sur MacBook Air laptop. I use adobe photoshop 2022 frequently, which got stuck and was not responding so I had to force quit. My OS had an Update to install, so is that in motion and the laptop seems to reboot after it showed the apple logo and then a progress bar. After that I logged in and noticed the little software update window was open with the little processing icon spinning next to the words, "Checking for updates. its been doing this for several hours. Should it take this long?

I understand Software Update has been stuck at "Checking for update" for hours, when it should only take a few moments at most.


Several workarounds have been proposed, such as restarting your Mac in "Safe Mode" and checking for updates while in that mode, and / or resetting NVRAM. Try both.
