Syslog (337) ASL Sender Statistics

this evening our iMac Console popped up with a bunch of Syslog (337) ASL Sender Statistics. We only have 1 device connected via USB, which has been switched off the past 4 days. Is this something to be worried about (from either a hardware issue or a security standpoint)?

This will included Norton Antivirus , Sophos Av Software

The Console application " popped up " without the Users Purposeful and Specifically going to Launchpad >> Others >> Console ?

If so, that does not sound normal regardless f an external Drive being or not being connected to the computer.

Can you elaborate further

The only thing attached is a X Tool laser (off for several days) and a monitor/keyboard. However after investigation, it may have been laser software trying to update and not finding the connection to the laser. We ran the Intego antivirus suite and didn’t find anything suspicious.

You should uninstall Intego antivirus. Many anomalies have been reported in the Apple Discussions from users running tools like that. It does things in the background, contacts Intego in the background, and slows down the Mac, and can result in error messages. It can interfere with the normal and rock solid MacOS security processes. Under Monterey, the MacOS is stored in a sealed, read-only snapshot volume and no users (including you) can actually make changes to it. Hence a virus cannot be installed or spread, physically not possible. Only a certified and verified installer from Apple's servers can update or change the MacOS.

To add to excellent advise already presented

Malwarebytes

There are no known Windows-like Viruses in the wild that self replicate and affect macOS, because of the underling UNIX Foundation and Permission Limitation.

Additionally, and specific to Big Sur macOS 11 and Monterey macOS 12, the Operating System resides in a Sealed and Read Only Volume that can not be opened by the User and protects against from “ Bad Actor “ Software.

The Only thing this Antivirus software is protecting is the Bank Account of the Developers and for zero return to the User aside from the problems this software creates.

AntiVirus Developers purposefully Market their product to create a “ Fear Factor “. In so doing, creating a False Need for their Product.

The The Built in Security is all that is required to protect the computer.

There is Adware & Malware which will affect the computer and is generally downloaded from “ Shady “ Websites or Developers who Inject this software into the download.

Should “ Certain & Specific Software “ referenced from above be installed - it will negatively impact macOS. It is suggested, download directly from the Developer , the application Malwarebytes for Mac.

It is free or paid for added features.

Run the Application and it should remove the malware / adware. Once done, restart computer and test.
