You seem to be confusing two very different concepts and reaching an incorrect conclusion.

Selfies. A selfie is a photo of yourself. This can be taken in either portrait of landscape mode using your iPad’s front facing camera in Photo mode.
Portrait Mode. Used to create a depth-of-field effect. Use camera modes on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
