How do I know if updates are installed

Go to Settings > General >About and look for the iOS version.

• If you have an iPhone 5S or 6/6plus, the highest you can update to is 12.5.6

• If you have an iPhone 6S through 7, you can update to 15.7

• If you have an iPhone 8 or higher, you can update to 16.1

Tap Settings

Tap General

Tap Software Update

You will be notified if the phone qualifies for a new update or whether your current system is already up to date

Apple is due to release a new version of iOS 16 perhaps later today.....(iOS 16.1).....so you may have to wait for it to appear if that is what you are looking for.
