Time Machine / osVentura / Trigger Backup Manually

Trying to use Time Machine with osVentura and TM says Next Backup: When triggered manually. I have no idea what that means. In the Time Machine options the Back up frequency cannot be changed to hourly etc. - the drop down menu jumps back to Manually when you try this. iMac Pro early 2017. Thank you.

Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support (CA)

From the above image the user has chosen to Manually Perform backups

Excerpt form above link

After you select your storage device in Time Machine settings, Time Machine automatically begins making periodic backups.

To start a backup manually, without waiting for the next automatic backup, choose Back Up Now from the Time Machine menu  in the menu bar.

Use the same menu to check the status of a backup or skip a backup in progress. For example, if a backup is underway, the menu shows how much of it is done. When a backup is not underway, the menu shows the date and time of the latest backup.

Thank you for your quick response. That was not my experience - Time Machine did not automatically start making periodic backups. Also, Back Up Now was not shown in the Menu Bar at top of screen. I did finally find a "Manual Start" option in the main Finder menu bar but that did not trigger a backup, the Menu Bar is still saying Time Machine is not configured and no Hard Drive has been selected as a destination (obviously I have tried adding several different ones here).

If you are using macOS Ventura, go to the apple logo on the top left -> system settings -> search for "time machine"

Option 1:

In system settings -> control center -> under Menu Bar section -> Time Machine -> Show in Menu Bar

Then click on the Time Machine at the top right -> Back Up Now

Option 2: In system settings -> Time Machine -> RIGHT click on your backup disk for the option to pop up to Back up now
