If you have forgotten the password, or were not aware that encryption had been enabled, consider that it might be any computer, Apple ID, Wi-Fi password or device PIN that you've used in the past, working from the assumption that you might have reused a common password that you were using when encryption was first activated. Troubleshooting a Forgotten Password:

Having forgotten the password, look for it in a location you may have stored a recored of it. Take this as a learning experience, knowing to always keep a handwritten journal of your passwords. That way, you can have something to refer to for instances such as this. Store this in a location on only YOU are knowledgable of, and only YOU have access to.
