Is there any way to transfer an iMovie project from Mac to iPhone, so I can edit the project on iPhone? (Preferably without having to use icloud, as I would have to upgrade the storage) Thanks!

Unfortunately, Mac iMOvie projects cannot be transferred from Mac to an iPhone or other iOS device.
What you can do is export the Mac project as a movie file on your desktop, and then use AirDrop to transfer the movie to your iPhone for import into a iPhone iMovie. It would come into iPhone iMovie as one large clip that could be edited to a limited extent like any other clip.
