My ipad Air is completely dead. Battery won't charge, I can't access any data, computer doesn't recognize it. How can I delete my information from it?

Unless you are able to successfully restart your iPad and enter the Passcode, you’ll not be able to access or erase any data - and neither can anyone else.

Your Passcode unlocks both the iPad and the iPad security chip (the “Secure Enclave”) within which is stored the encryption keys that secure the data stored within the iPad encrypted filesystem. Unless the iPad is running - and the correct Passcode has been successfully entered - all data is beyond reach of anyone.

If your iPad battery is dead, then your data is and will remain secure and inaccessible. If the battery is replaced, encrypted local data will be erased.

Should you wish to do so, you might try leaving your iPad connected to its Power Adapter undisturbed overnight - and the following day, attempt a forced restart of the iPad. If the iPad remains unresponsive, there is nothing more to do.

Forced restart:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
