I am trying to designate my Apple ID as the HomePod Account:
I click on “Sign In” and get that:
It says, “Could not complete operation” (this is for search engines).
I have restarted the HomePod although not set it up from scratch.
What could be going on?

Are the Home app and your iPhone using different Apple IDs? Normally you'd have one Apple ID for all Apple services.

I was able to log back in by doing it in the iPhone Home app. Looks like a bug to me.
@turingtest2: That’s what I ended up doing. Since then, I have logged my HomePod out from the account programmed in by my iPhone. Trying to log in, in the Home app, I get the same “Could not complete operation” alert. That cannot be the intended function.
