iMessage app consistently turning black

when I click on iMessages all I get is a black screen. After restarting my phone I am able to open messages and receive notifications again, however the issue quickly persists usually after 20-30 minutes. I have tried a force restart, turning off and on imessages, and updating my device, none of which have helped.

Hello Lukelimits,

If the Messages app opens to a blank, black screen consistently, you'll want to start by making sure your iPhone is running the latest iOS version, which is iOS 16.1.2. You can check that by going to Settings > General > About > Software Version. If needed, learn more about updating your iPhone here: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

If your iPhone is updated and this issue continue happening, reaching out to Apple Support directly is the next best step. They're best-equipped to take a closer look and provide some additional guidance. This link will help you get started: Contact - Official Apple Support

Take care.
