My Apple TV remote does not light up at all. I have tried plugging it in. Could it be dead?

My Apple TV remote does not light up at all.
There are no visible “light up” indicators on the remote itself, not for using it, not for charging.
Using the remote should be reflected by the status light blinking on the Apple TV box.
Charging the remote should show a climbing charge level percentage in the on-screen Settings for the Apple TV box.
