Film not working on Apple TV but works on iPhone app

So I just rented the devils advocate used my iPhone to rent the film which I can watch it on but when I go to watch it on Apple TV on my tv it comes up with ‘This type of content is not currently compatible with your device. To play, try again using an apple device’ anyone know how to sort this out? As I can’t stream it from my phone to my tv either as I get an error message saying ‘this video is in format that can’t be streamed to this tv’

iTunes Store rentals, as rented on any of your device, should be compatible with any third party device that has the Apple TV app, when that device is listed as supported.

- Verify that the TV system software is up-to-date.

- Verify that the Apple TV app is up-to-date, if apps don’t update automatically. Try delete and re-install if needed.


Find the rented content in the Library tab of the Apple TV app on your smart TV, when signed in with the matching Apple ID account as used to make the rental purchase.


Rent movies from the Apple TV app - Apple Support


Are you (your internet connection) in the country that matches the country of your Apple ID account? No VPN to a different country? Not sure how strict that is, but it might cause issues if different.


Else I would suggest to contact an expert from the Apple Support staff for further assistance. Contact Apple for support and service (phone numbers) or start your support request online (chat/​email/​callback).
