Apple Pencil 2nd gen to 1st gen

Obviously, I didn’t know Apple Pencil 2nd gen won’t work on my iPad Pro.

so now I have to return 2nd gen and buy 1st gen instead. I bought on Nov 29th as a Christmas present to myself. I opened yesterday and found it doesn’t work.

can I go to the Apple Store and exchange it ?
