Are apple pencils compatible for iPad 5th Gen (2017)? If not what are good alternatives?

The iPad5 does not support Apple Pencil - as this and other older models do not have the required screen hardware with which the Pencil interacts with the host iPad.

There are no functionally equivalent alternatives. Basic capacitive stylii offer no more capability than a fingertip - although may provide slightly improved accuracy.
