My iPhone is up to date: 16.2
I no longer get the blue dot next to new text messages.
I’ve restarted my phone.
i can mark my messages as unread (nice), but the blue dot is no longer automatically there with new text messages.

You may have multiple devices and it may be getting read elsewhere.
Check Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding > [Disable the device that you no longer need or do not recognize any device]
