Factory reset tied into previous account holder

I am in the process of shutting down my late husbands apple account. I have forgotten my admin password for a late 2012 Yosemite. I have tried to reset but no success. Factory reset may be the only answer but I understand the device will be tied into what will be a no existent account. If I want to sell on or re use with OS X installed how can I do this ? Thanks

Sorry that you have lost your husband.

Wondering if this Apple Support article (link below) may help:

How to request access to a deceased family member's Apple account - Apple Support

Eg: If you gain access, you may want to make account changes.

Thank you very much for your reply. I have an active case with the support team at the moment.

I have tried all the things via the help links but no luck. I suspect a factory reset is the only option and then I may need to retire her due to her age. Just thought I would check on here to see if there was anything obvious I have missed and could try.

All the best to you and thank you again.
