Help! Need to get my data OFF the iCloud, back on my Desktop!

Please someone tell me how I Remove my Data from ICloud to get it back on my Mac. I don't have time to waste & go through the hassle of getting on the web - Just to get to use my own documents!

Somehow while having multiple problems with Ventura, ALL my documents & data were uploaded on the Cloud. When I realized it was uploading my data, I tried to stop it, but it showed "if you stop xxx Photos that are of "low resolution" will be deleted." How Dare Apple. aka, the Cloud decide for Me what to keep & what to get rid of?

I needed to copy n past something to a document for a meeting tonight. That's when I saw all Documents folders were blank, save 1 that has "QuickTime"on it? What is That about? I've searched Help & Spotlight, & on line help: zip / zero results for this.

Pleas Help, I really need to know How to Remove all my data from the Cloud & Restore it back to my Mac. I want All of it OFF the Cloud & back on my Mac. Mille grazie to any who help

Anything in iCloud is also on your Mac. If you elected to optimize your Mac, then your oldest/largest files may be offloaded to iCloud only to save space. Otherwise, you'll always have your documents on your Mac.

You can turn on/off iCloud sync at System Settings > Apple ID > icloud

iCloud Drive syncs everything in your iCloud Drive folder to icloud

If you further enable desktop and documents (under options ) or other apps to sync, that data also syncs through iCloud.

If you disable desktop and documents after it has been enabled, new desktop and documents folders are created but your previous files are located in iCloud Drive under "desktop" and "documents." Those files can then be dragged back to any location.

Kathy, do as muguy recommended, but you need to be patient and wait for all your photos and documents to download back to your Mac, before you disable iCloud. It may take a long time for a large Photos Library or many items on iCloud Drive to download back to your mac. And you have to have enough free storage on your Mac. Check, if all your photos will still fit into the local storage on your Mac.Free storage, if necessary.

If you are seeing "if you stop xxx Photos that are of "low resolution" will be deleted.", the option "Optimize Mac Storage" has become enabled in the Photos > Settings > iCloud. Keep iCloud Photos enabled for the time being and change the checkmark to "Download originals to this mac". Then watch the status bar below the "All Photos" view to show the download progress. Once all photos and videos are back on your Mac you can turn off iCloud Photos, or leave the photos in iCloud for easy syncing across all devices and as an offsite copy.

Photos is not always downloading all photos instantly. As long as the warning about "incomplete" persists, the download has not finished. You can force the download and speed it up by using your photos. Photos will download photos, when you export the originals, for example, or add adjustments, or watch them as a slideshow.

I really think, turning off "optimize" and letting Photos bring the originals back is the best option. Then your Photos Library will be back to normal, exactly as it used to be, before "Optimize" has become enabled. If you download the photos manually from the web page, you would lose all your work done in Photos and and have to recreate your Photos Library with all your metadata and albums and folders.

I wonder what has caused the "Optimize" option to become and enabled. It is the default option, when we enable iCloud Photos. And iCloud Photos may be enabled as a default after a system upgrade, if we have subscribed to enough iCloud Storage to hold all our photos.

While not all photos have been downloaded back to your Mac, your Time Machine backup of your Mac's Photos Library, your Time Machine backup of your Photos Library will be incomplete. This is another reason not to disable iCloud Photos, until your Photos Library is again holding all your photos in high resolution . On no account turn off iCloud Photos or remove any photos from iCloud, before you have them back on your Mac, or you may be deleting your only copies of your photos.

Hey there Kathylpv,

For your feedback regarding iCloud and macOS Ventura, we wanted to provide a link that you can use to submit feedback to Apple for consideration: Product Feedback

Moving forward with your question about saving a copy of what's on iCloud to your Mac, we wanted to set the expectation that you may need to access the iCloud website, but this link shows all the different ways to do this: Archive or make copies of the information you store in iCloud

For your final question regarding adjusting iCloud settings on your Mac, the steps to do this are under the section 'On your Mac' here: Change your iCloud settings The link also shows how to adjust settings on different devices other than your Mac.

Cheers!

bruno75, muguy, & léonie

Sorry I haven't gotten back to all of you, spent the last 4 weeks fixing Mail SMTP etc problems.

Any ole who, Thanks to each of you for your quick responses . . . to my problemo.

To Bruno - done that, all, checked Everywhere on line & in Help - all say IF I take them off the Cloud, they will "Delete" over 800 of my Photos because they're "low resolution" None of those helped me. And - I'm an Artist & Deliberatly made some as "low Resolution" &n Others are of my bisnonna & famiglia" ca 1865 - 1970s. & Yes I was told that they are "files" with pixels, not Photos. But HOW DARE Apple tell me I can & can't have these on my computer? Many of these were E-mailed to me, by mia famiglia, & are Not on my camera. So those would be lost & some of those who sent them, have since died! So, I can't get them back on my computer.

To muguy I do know that what's on the cloud is also on my Mac - Problem is, as I was trying to fix severe Mail problems, I must have clicked "upload to iCloud" & didn't realize it till it was Too late! Again, how dare Apple tell me they'll delete my Photos from the Desktop. & I don't remember ever doing 'optimize" on my Mac? Gut then, I was so frantically trying to fix mail problems, I may have done that?

2nd] I don't Want anything on the Cloud - they had some documents, data of "Private clients" of mine, that I had deleted from my Computer [but weren't deleted on the cloud?}

When I saw these documents on the Cloud, I deleted every one of them, save 4 genealogy listing docs. & voila, Then, Finder had [& still does] 2 Documents Folders, one empty & there are Duplicates of everything I had in my original Documents Folder? So now I have to search each document, see if it's 'up to date" & trash the old ones?

3rd] I know I can turn off ICloud in settings. But again, 'low resolution photos' would be deleted from desktop" - But since I want Nothing on the Cloud, I don't understand what you're saying below, because I want nada on the Cloud. I want none of it "synced" with the cloud:

"If you further enable desktop and documents (under options ) or other apps to sync, that data also syncs through iCloud.

If you disable desktop and documents after it has been enabled, new desktop and documents folders are created but your previous files are located in iCloud Drive under "desktop" and "documents." Those files can then be dragged back to any location." ?

To léonie Got it, tried that with Photos, but it's slow going with a router; no cable, Fios notavailable here, & 5G costs double what we pay now! So, won't likely be doing that. When I tried to download, cx, photos on the Cloud after 3 hours, it was "still in progress" with photos. & again, Apple will delete "low resolution" from my Desktop? Why?

As to "enough free storage on my Mac" confuses me. 2 things, I've Never had more than 10-25% of "used space" on any of my computers, esp Macs. This computer is 8 GB. Yet Systems shows I have: Mac stuff, 234.58 GB - most I never use, ie Music, Movie [2.59 GB, & Micro-swift 1.42 GB, etc. & some I don't know what they are. [maybe cookies?]. I'd delete these & others, in Systems Storage Applications, but Only after I get all down from the Cloud! But I don't want more of my Photos dragged up there, only to be deleted when I finally dump iCloud access.

I do have 5.2 GB in photos & some MB & 37.34 GB documents [most duplicates I manually deleted from the cloud or from my older version, I like better?] I wish I could get rid of all those ios "perks" that i don't use. Easier said than done.

Thanks for the All your Photo download advice, though. W O W! You really made it clear what I have to do & how. I'll try to download my Photos as you say, & hope it doesn't take as long as it did before! I only hope the previous download process, incomplete as it was, doesn't hinder the next attempt. About syncing to the Cloud, my only other devices are a very OLD iPad, rarely charged or used, & my 2012 Mac, still running well. I'm old fashioned, won't EvEr have a Cell ; > }

mille grazie & vada con dio a tutti

Ok, muguy & léonie,

I just downloaded my photos from the cloud, but it didn't go to the Mac Photo App. it went to 'Download" -

But then I realized those older photos, my bisnonna, grandparents, parents & other family, that I got via emails, that weren't there on the iCloud. They should have been on still it. The only thing I can think of is go to my Time machine & upload them, but then would I loose the newer ones I just added in? Although, I could upload all those not saved on the Time machine from my camera, couldn't I?

Too, when I disable the iCloud - will my documents & mail, etc. still be on my Mac, as I have them?

Sorry just thinking out loud here but it is disappointing to loose those older photos. Any ideas?
