See if wake on wrist raise is off

open the Settings app  on your Apple Watch, go to Display & Brightness, then turn on Wake on Wrist Raise and Wake On Crown Rotation.

If this is on, check if your Watch is not in the theatre mode

swipe up on your Watch screen to the control center and notice the symbol with 2 theatre Masks. If this symbol is orange, theatre mode is on, tap the symbol to turn theatre mode off
