Pairing 2 Homepods

Using my HD Apple TV, can I pair two of the new HomePods for stereo or do I need the Apple TV 4K to achieve that?

You can pair two similar HomePods for stereo - see Set up a HomePod stereo pair - Apple Support - but home theatre audio is only supported on the Apple TV 4K and 4K v2.
