Using headphones with Mac mini and Studio Display

My Mac Mini (M2 chip, 24 GB, Ventura 13.2.1) has a headphone jack. It is connected to my 27" Studio Display via Thunderbolt. When I insert my headphones into Mini Pearl's headphone jack, I thought it would direct all sound through my headphones. Instead, my husband, sitting at his desk across the room, can hear the music apparently coming from the Studio Display. What am I doing wrong?
