Reinstalling mac os but cant find disk

I have macbook air 2012 it starts up sometimes but soon goes to the spinning colour wheel before I can actually do anything on it. When I then restart it goes straight to blue screen and eventually a question mark. I have it in recovery mode I can only see MAC OS BASE System. I went to first aid that and it says no issues. So then I go to reinstall the mac OS, I am at this point now and it is asking me to select the disk where you want to install OS X but there is no disk to select??? What do I do next?

We understand that your Mac isn't able to see the internal disk drive in order to install macOS again.


If your Mac starts up to a flashing question mark, it indicates that it can't find a system to start from. If your Macintosh HD isn't listed as a disk to install to, the drive may need to be replaced. You can reset the NVRAM on your Mac to help you to determine if it's able to locate a disk to install to after doing so. Check out this resource which explains what the NVRAM does and how to reset it: Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

If you're not using a Mac with Apple silicon, you're using an Intel-based Mac.

How to reset NVRAM

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold these four keys together: Option, Command, P, R.
  3. Release the keys after about 20 seconds, during which your Mac might appear to restart. For example, you might hear a startup sound more than once, or see the Apple logo more than once.
  4. When your Mac finishes starting up, you might need to adjust any system settings that were reset."

You can also run a diagnostic test on your Mac to check its hardware: Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support


If a hardware issue is detected, you may need to replace your Mac as service may not be available for a 2012 model: Obtaining service for your Apple product after an expired warranty - Apple Support

What version of the macOS installer is being booted (or will be installed...you see it on the recovery mode screen "Reinstall macOS xxxxxx" where "xxxxxx" is the OS version)?


Within Disk Utility you may need to click "View" and select "Show All Devices" before the physical SSD appears on the left pane of Disk Utility.


You can also try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected.


Are you using the original Apple OEM SSD or is a third party SSD installed? If the latter, then what is the exact make & model?
