With iPhojne satellite capabilities do we need an external device like the Garmin inReach Mini anymore

I understand that in situations where there is no cell service the iPhone 14 can use send satellite text messages. Does that make devices like the Garmin inReach Mini and its associated subscription obsolete? Thanks in advance.

Thanks. Thats what I was looking for. I didn’t realize that the iPhone could only send a text to emergency personnel. You can’t use the Satellite feature to send routine texts when out of range of cell towers like you can with the Garmin device. That was what I needed to know

Idris stated it well in that only you can decide based on the device capabilities.

That said, while iPhone’s new capabilities are indeed impressive, i don’t think that anyone would consider it a replacement for a purpose-built, ruggedized, outdoors emergency device.

It’s certainly not a replacement for a “proper” PLB.

(ever tried to use your iPhone in the rain ?)
