"Error Description Not Available" - Cannot log back in my phone using FIDO2 device (Iphone XS IOS 16.4.1)

Hi,

I did register two NFC Fido2 Security Keys which were properly accepted in my Apple ID for 2FA. Now I am trying to log back in and I get the above error on my phone. I can perfectly log in here via Chrome & Windows11 using 2FA with the registered device

Has anyone got a solution ?

Thanks

iPhone XS

Thanks for your answer. The device is Certified Fido2 Level1 on the Fido Alliance website, and IOS accepted the card registration. On a second iphone which had both the same Fido device (causing the same problem) and a different FIDO2 device, I was able to log back in with the different device. I erased the registration in IOS of the device generating the same error, and re-registered it. Afterwards I could use it to log back in and could not reproduce the problem anymore, everything was solved. The keys were registered on an earlier version of IOS, 16.4 or 16.3. The problem may have arised with a security key having been registered under 16.3 or 16.4, and failed with a login attempt under 16.4.1 after upgrade. Registration and login on 16.4.1 works without problem. Looks like an upgrade bug on apple side.

Thanks for reaching out QuantumHopper91,

It sounds like you're using a security key to access your device, but it is only working in Chrome on your Windows PC and not with your iPhone XS. We can help.

One possible reason you might run into this behavior is if you are using a child account , or an otherwise managed account with your device - such as when using an iPhone that is managed by your work or school. Can you confirm if any profiles are currently set up that could be interfering with this functionality?

A great resource we can keep handy is this guide About Security Keys for Apple ID. It also recommends that we make sure you're using a compatible key with your iPhone and other Apple devices:

Choose the right security keys

Security Keys for Apple ID works with any FIDO® Certified security key. Some good examples include:
* YubiKey 5C NFC (works with most Mac and iPhone models)
* YubiKey 5Ci (works with most Mac and iPhone models)
* FEITIAN ePass K9 NFC USB-A (works with older Mac models and most iPhone models)
If you choose a different security key, you should choose security keys that are FIDO® Certified, and have a connector that works with the Apple devices that you use on a regular basis.
For a complete list of certified keys from the FIDO Alliance, visit the FIDO® Certified Showcase.

Let's make sure your device is listed on the compatible list, and once we've confirmed that and that you're not using a managed device we can investigate further.

Hope that helps.
