Upgrading OS in old Mac

I handed down my old iMac to my wife. In doing so, I removed all the old files and started over. The Mac is now running Yosemite. Is there any way to upgrade it? I can't even update the browser until I do.

Click here and then on the download link for a more-recent OS. A Mac running Yosemite can be upgraded at least as far as El Capitan.

Thanks Niel! One of the problems I faced was being unable to go to that website because Yosemite's version of Safari wouldn't render the web page and I couldn't update Safari. So I tried Firefox/Mozilla, and couldn't install that, either. Finally had some luck downloading Chrome, which would render the page, and then I was able to update the OS! I'm still updating this morning.
