Probably more info than you need...
Mail and Google's OAuth 2.0 policy
Mac's Mail App is not as modern as iOS's Mail app, Many eMail providers now require a separate App Password different from your eMail password…
If it's an IMAP account, delete it in Sys Prefs Internet Accounts then use "Other" instead of gMail choice to add it.
Most likely biggest factor is using Other in Mail setup, then using a Browser that doesn’t have gMail PW stored init to get the App PW.

I also spent hours trying to solve this issue until I followed this video... It worked and my Gmail accounts are back on Mac Mail.
Give it a shot and good luck! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0WPw2TsTAY
It might just need an App Password separate from the gMail password…

Visit http://www.gmail.com and get the IMAP settings for your account. Then remap Mac OS X Mail with the IMAP settings.
Apple's "defacto Gmail" account setting is the one labelled Google when you add accounts through Mac OS X Mail such as the example below from Monterey. The Add Other Accounts... lets you specify IMAP accounts instead:
Google, Yahoo, and AOL all are account types that were valid at the time the operating system was put out that you are using. But they may no longer be valid today.
Thanks for trying to help.
The link you sent is for adding a gmail account.
I already have a gmail account, but my problem is I can't get Mail to put it back online. It was yesterday. I've authenticated through both Chrome and Safari.
If you have any other thoughts, I'd be happy to try them.
I've been trying to authenticate using the Settings/Internet Accounts/ and then selecting iCloud (personal email) and Google (business email.) Works fine for my personal setting, doesn't "stick" with Google. And only on one of my four devices, the one I use for business. And I have no problem accessing my business emails through myaccount.google... I'm not sure if this process is what you referred to as "Apple's defacto Gmail add account feature"
Thanks for helping.
Like many people who write on these forums, my Gmail on my Mac has failed to work. It says it is offline. This has never happened before. My internet is working 100%. Why has Gmail suddenly decided to go offline? In other words, why has this happened? [NOTE: I have made no changes, no password, no updates to system] and how can I get my Gmail back online? It has already been set up for Gmail for literally decades. So please anyone who knows the answer, please don't write: this is how you set up gmail OR these are the iMap settings - all of that is known. What is unknown is the answer to my question and only my question. I am given no options on settings on Gmail except offline. ?????
If you used Apple's defacto Gmail add account feature from Mac OS X Mail the settings for that may be obsolete. IMAP though is not obsolete and is a better standard.
